Sunday, August 29, 2010 marked the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in Louisiana. Five years ago, Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, centered on New Orleans, as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph (205 km/h). More than fifty levees were breached by its storm surge, causing massive flooding. Over 1,800 Gulf Coast residents lost their lives then, and damages totaled more than $80 billion – the costliest hurricane in U.S. history. Many intangible things were damaged then as well, communities were erased as their neighborhoods washed away, much of historic New Orleans was badly damaged, and frustration and anger remain towards an inadequate immediate response by the U.S. government. Collected here are images from five years ago, as well as some from the past few weeks, in New Orleans and the surrounding area. (49 photos total)

Martial arts styles of fighting like those used in MMA en K1 is the new boxing. More exciting, faster paced, harder and tougher fighters. It’s popularity has sky rocketed during the last 10 years and whether the fight nights are being held in small gyms or big stadiums, it is always sold out. But no matter how hard the fighters go at each other in the ring, the basics of this sport are founded on respect and sportsmanship.

Before this crash, only 30 trained police officers were allowed to drive the specially modified Lamborghini Gallardo used by the Italian State Police.

After this crash I’m certain there were only 29 trained officers allowed to drive the one other Lambo in the cop car pool.

World Cup 2010: Blikkiesdorp

South Africa is basking in the glory that the FIFA World Cup 2010 brings with it. An army of foreign fans all having fun together, enjoying the football and enjoying South Africa. This is what the world gets to see, a new and improved South Africa. Crime is down, infrastructure has been much improved, the people are friendly and the Rand keeps on rolling in the hospitality business. It would seem that South Africans are benefitting from the World Cup being held in their country, but this is not the case for the thousands living in Blikkiesdorp.

Blikkiesdorp was built in 2007 near Cape Town and contains 1,600 structures made from shiny corrugated iron, Blikkiesdorp translates as Tin Can Town. The people there would have loved to have seen some of the 63 billion Rand the hosting of the World Cup is estimated to cost South Africa go their way in improved housing, schooling and permanent jobs.

Have you ever wondered what real gangster life is like?  And I’m not talking about the movies. True, they do illegal stuff for a living but they too have their fun and lives almost like us (except for the killing).    In fact, they get treated a bit better.  An outfit in London’s East End called “The Firm” allowed photographer Jocelyn Bain Hogg to follow them around and take some crazy black and whites of their lives.

Formula 1 is dropping its cargo in Turkey this weekend. Multi-million dollar motorhomes, hot babes, shiny cars, highly paid drivers, top safety equipment names we all recognise. Oh how different it was in the 70’s and 80’s. This is a great overview of some of the drivers and cars from the good old days. As your dad would call them.
